Luka Modric has won the Golden Ball, the prize that goes with the best footballer in the world. The election of the magazine France Football was won five times in the past ten years by Lionel Messi and also five times by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Modric shone, unlike Messi and Ronaldo, at the world championship in Russia on behalf of Croatia. The Croats lost the final of France. Cristiano Ronaldo finished second in the election, Antoine Griezmann third. Lionel Messi stayed behind in the fifth place behind Kylian Mbappé.
The Golden Ball has been awarded since 1956 and the choice is made by international journalists. The world football association FIFA has since 2015 its own election to designate the best footballer in the world, which was won earlier this year by the 33-year-old midfielder of Real Madrid. With that team he also won the Champions League in 2018.

Mbappé (19) won the first Kopa Trophy, the Golden Ball for talents. In addition to the Golden Ball, a prize for talents was also awarded for the first time this year, Ritsu Doan (FC Groningen) and Justin Kluivert (AS Roma) were also nominated.
Also the women's football experienced the scoop of the Golden Ball. The first winner was the Norwegian Ada Hegerberg, player of Olympique Lyon. Lieke Martens got stuck at the eleventh place.
